Designated as the first national park in 1967, jirisan spreads across1 city and 4 counties in three-provinces – Hadong, Hamyang, Sancheong of Gyeongnam province, Gurye of jeonnam province, and Namwon of jeonbuk , The total area of jirisan National park is 471.758㎢, which makes it the largest mountainous national park in Korea. The name of Jirisan means “the mountain of the odd and wise people.” Perhaps due to this name, many hermits sought for truth, and devoted themselves at jirisan. Since the ancient times, together with Geumgangsan and hallasan, Jirisan has been known as one of the three legendary mountains in Korea, and a hallowed ground of the nation’s faith. The circumference of jirisan is over 320km, and numerous peaks are spread out like a folding screen in the center of Cheonwangbong(1,915m), Banyabong(1,732m), and nogodan(1,507m) peaks. Many valleys are situated over 20 ridges. Jirisan is the cause for the cultural differences and varieties between regions to its east and west. it is not easy to express the attraction of Jirisan with words because it is more than just being big, deep, and wide.

With 4,989 flora and fauna inhabiting it’s grounds. Jirisan is a treasure chest of nature. Various vegetation from warm-temperate forests and temperate central forests to cold forests populate jirisan. Natural treasures such as the Higan cherry tree at Hwaeomsa(Temple) and the Waun Cheonyeongsong(Millennium Pine Tree) are in Jirisan. Which is also native to Hares, Roes, Elks, Wildcats, and other mammals in its hills.

What You Can Expect

The best hiking course of Jirisan is the traversing course.
The course, which stretches for 25.5km from West side of Jiri Nogodan & Banyabong to East of Jiri Cheongwangbong Peak, usually takes 3 days and 2 nights to cover.

The usual 'traversing course' refers to the course running from Hwaeomsa Temple to Nogodan Peak, Yeonhacheon Shelter, Byeoksoryeong Shelter, Jangteomok Shelter, and Cheonwangbong Peak, while the course runs down in the direction of Dawonsa Temple. It takes 46Km for 4days 3 nights.

However, most visitors prefer to take the hiking course from Seongsamjae Pass to Nogodan Peak, from where they pass over Cheonwangbong Peak and climb down to Jungsan-ri.

Over a period of 3 days 2 nights, visitors can spend one night at Yeonhacheon Shelter or Byeoksoryeong Shelter, and two nights at Jangteokmok Shelter, after Hiker can watch the sunrise at Cheonwangbong Peak before climbing down the mountain.

Hikers are advised to carry emergency food, lanterns, extra clothing, drinking water, and a first aid kit. They should also wear mountaineering clothes and shoes. Traveling past Nogodan Shelter and following the ridgeline leading to Nogodan Peak (1507m), visitors will hike to the highest peak of Jirisan, Cheonwangbong Peak (1915m) after passing over so many high peak, with spectacular beautiful view of Jiri

The weather at Cheonwangbong Peak is so changeable that it is very difficult to see sunrise there. Hikers can climb down from Cheonwangbong Peak via Jungsanni (5.4Km) or Daewonsa Temple (13.7Km).

A lot of preparation is required to prevent accidents when opting for the traversing course.
